Abstract
1,214,053. Two-compartment injection ampoules. H. WIMMER. 5 Feb., 1968, No. 5744/ 68. Heading A5R. Two-compartment injecton ampoules comprising an ampoule barrel adapted to receive an injection needle at one end, and having a resilient sealing piston at the other end and an intermediate piston which initially divides the ampoule into two compartments, the contents of which are mixed by moving the intermediate piston towards the sealing piston, and the ampoule contents are injected by urging both intermediate and sealing pistons down the ampoule, are characterised in having a plunger which moves the intermediate piston so that, on movement of the intermediate piston towards the sealing piston, a previously sealed channel is opened which connects the two compartments across the intermediate piston and, during injection, both pistons are movably connected and move together down the ampoule. In the embodiments illustrated in Figs. 1-10 (Figs. 2-10 not shown) the bore of the piston 103 and the plunger 106 fitting into it are so shaped that in the initial position they together constitute a seal between compartments 109 and 110 but movement of the plunger to urge the intermediate piston towards the sealing piston causes relative movement therebetween and a channel is opened between the thinner end portion 161 of the plunger and the piston, the abutment ridge 115 (which is channeled to allow passage of liquid) urging the piston in the correct direction. When the two pistons meet and mixing is complete, the sealing piston (and hence the intermediate piston also) are urged down the ampoule by means such as a shaped ridge 197 on the plunger cooperating with a groove of appropriate profile in the sealing piston (Figs. 1 to 5). Alternatively, an additional plunger fitted outside the plunger for the intermediate piston and acting on both the sealing piston and the inner plunger (Figs. 8, 9, 10 and 12) may be used. Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown) depict a device in which a duct 12a passes axially through the plunger 6a from a point 19 initially closed by the piston 3a but which opens into the upper compartment when the plunger first moves, the ridge 20 serving to hold the plunger and piston together with the duct open during subsequent movement of the plunger.
