Abstract
1,213,855. Lockable artificial knee joint. INSTITUTET FOR NYTTIGGORANDE AV FORSKNINGS-RESULTAT. 5 March, 1968 [10 March, 1967], No. 10589/68. Heading A5R. A leg harness or artificial leg with a lockable knee joint comprises a thigh portion 1 pivotally connected at 11 to a shank portion 4 via a plate 10 rigidly connected to the shank. A lever 12' with a shaped end portion 12, which fits over the nose of plate 10 to lock the knee joint, is attached pivotally to the thigh portion at 13 and is urged into the locking position by resilient means 14 attached to the thigh portion. Also attached to the lever 12' is a connection with the foot plate 9, comprising a cord 15, the length of which is adjustable by a shroud screw 16, and a rod 17 which passes through a guide 18, on which is mounted a pressure spring 20, which provides a force preventing the foot portion 8, 9 from "dropping" 'by swinging about the pivot 7. When the leg is straight, the knee joint is locked, but when it swings rearwardly and the foot rests on the ground, the joint will be freed by the pull of the connection 15, 16, 17 on the lever 12', allowing the knee to be bent. On making a forward movement, the knee remains bent, due to the tension of the member 14, until the inertia of the shank and foot overcomes this tension and the joint is again locked until the foot is bent upwards, e.g. on contacting the ground.
