Abstract

1,213,471. Agitating by ultrasonic vibration. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 26 Jan., 1968 [17 Feb., 1967; 18 July, 1967; 5 Sept., 1967; 27 Nov., 1967], Nos. 7698/67, 32996/67, 40536/67 and 53780/67. Heading B1C. [Also in Divisions H1 and H4] A battery plate for a lead-acid battery is manufactured by supplying a non-flowable lead-acid battery paste to one face of the plate grid and then subjecting the paste to vibrational energy, causing it to flow into the interstices of the grid. In a particular embodiment the grids, each up to 1/4 inch thick, are pasted in pairs each pair being joined together at their bases and lying flat with their lugs pointing outwards. The grid pairs 21 are initially transported through the apparatus on conveyor 22, the grids travelling on rails and being drawn along by chain driven fingers which engage their lugs. The paste is mixed in hopper 23 and extruded from nozzle 39, the continuous strip of paste being cut into sections by rotating wire cutter 41. Ultrasonic oscillator 25 is driven by transducer 54 through velocity transformer 52. Block and pad 57 and 58 are of rubber and bush 59 is of PTFE. The oscillator is cooled by water flowing in at 62 and out at 64. The oscillator dips into the paste on the grid and oscillates at a frequency up to 24 kc/s. and an amplitude of 0.0001-0.01 inches. Its lower surface is inclined at 30-45‹ to the grids. To paste a pair of grids 4 oscillators are used side by side with P.T.F.E. shims in between. Flexible grids are supported by steel bar 24 whilst under the oscillator. The bar is supported on a mounting block (Fig. 3, not shown) which may be heated to 120-200‹ C. by steam passed through it. The support has channels in it to allow some of the paste to pass through the grid to the underside. The gap between the oscillators and support may be closed at the ends by guide plates (82, Fig. 3) which prevent spillage sideways. The upper surface of the pasted plates is smoothed by doctor blade 72 and the plates then pass through sensor 73 which actuates invertor 74. The invented grids are again subjected to oscillation at 28 and smoothed at 75 before entering drying oven 29. Inventor 76 also brushes surplus paste from the edges of the grid pans before they are separated at 85. In a modification (a) a second paste hopper may be present between invertor 74 and the oscillator 28 to paste the second side of the plate (b) the conveyors may be of sprocket type engaging perforations made in special battery grids and (c) the two oscillators corresponding to each plate may be inclined to give thicker pasting in the middle of the plate.
