Abstract
1,213,448. Centrifugal pumps. SIEMENS A.G July 11, 1969 [July 13 1968 (2)], No.35178/69. Heading F1C. A pump comprises an impeller 1, an inlet 3 and an outlet 5 for liquid and a small port 7 which can communicate with the atmosphere and which is located within a zone 9 of the casing cover in which there will be created a positive pressure during forward running of the impeller and a negative pressure during reverse running, whereby air will be drawn into the pump during reverse rotation to prevent the pumping of liquid. The zone 9 extends from 15 degrees beyond the tongue 8 to 35 degrees ahead of it, relative to the normal direction of rotation. Within this zone, the port 7 may be located 25 degrees ahead of the tongue 8 and just within the impeller periphery, the best position being influenced by the tip curvature of the tongue. The port 7 can instead be located at the place where the volute 4 is narrowest or where the tangent to the volute wall is at the smallest angle to the radius r. A ridge (not shown) is provided adjacent the port 7 to deflect the flow into the port during forward running and away from the port during reverse running, thereby increasing the positive pressure and negative pressure respectively.
