Abstract
1,212,714. Making composite wire. SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 Feb., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 5925/68. Heading B3A. A method of making composite wire comprises cleaning and roughening a metal core 5, covering the core with a metal tape 1 having a cleaned surface, heating the covering material to produce and maintain a temperature difference between it and the core while pressure is applied by a series of rolls, each series at 90 degrees to each other, to bond the inner and outer metals, and stripping off excess cladding material. The tape 1, which is of aluminium is cleaned by wire brushes 3 and formed by rolls 4 into U-shape. The core 5, which is of steel and may be plated, is encased in the tape by forming rolls 10. The rod so formed is heated in a neutral or reducing atmosphere and passed through rolls 12, 14 to bond the tape and wire together. The pressure rolls 12 form fin-like protrusions on the tape Fig. 2(D) (not shown) which are removed by dies 20 and after passing through the rolls 14 it is brought to its final shape in dies 15. The steel core may be cleaned by pickling prior to bonding, but pickling should be followed by mechanical cleaning.
