Abstract

1,212,649. Selective printing. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 3 March, 1969 [2 March, 1968], No. 11142/69. Heading B6F. Each selection member for a spring loaded printing plunger 1 (Figs. 1 to 3) of a postal code printer includes a hook 15 pivotally mounted to a sleeve 9 for electromagnetic selection either into alignment with the rear end of the plunger 1, Fig. 5, or out of alignment (Fig. 4). The sleeve 9 is mounted in a guide member comprising spaced plates (7 and 8) for movement therewith and relative thereto against the force of a spring (10). The guide member is displaced, within each printing cycle, into a rear selection position (Fig. 1) and then into a front working position (Fig. 3), by known means, for example a cam. A slide 6 is mounted in the sleeve 9 for longitudinal displacement to a front or rear position to pivot the hook 15 out of or into alignment with the printing plunger, via a two armed lever 17 pivoted at 19 to the sleeve 9, and a spring 18 forming a bi-stable trigger mechanism. The rear end of the slide 6 forms the armature (6<SP>11</SP>) of an electromagnet (21) fixed in a plate behind the guide member. With movement of the guide member (i.e. plates 7 and 8) into the selection position (Fig. 1), all the slides 6 are brought into their front position due to their armatures (6<SP>11</SP>) striking against their associated electromagnets, thereby moving all the hooks 15 out of alignment with their respective printing plungers. As the guide member advances into its working position, the slides 6 associated with the selectively energized electromagnets (21) will have their armatures retained, thereby moving their respective hooks 15 into alignment with their respective printing plungers 1. Continued movement of the guide member will cause these selected plungers to print. Impression adjustments.-During the printing operation, the rear face of the head 6<SP>1</SP> of each slide 6 bears against the end of the rear bore in the sleeve 9. However, the sleeve 9 and hence the hook 15 and the printing plunger 1, can withdraw in relation to the plates (7 and 8) of the guide member, against the action of the spring (10, Fig. 3), thereby compensating for irregularities in the postal package (5). Heating arrangements for types.-The guide plate (2, Fig. 1) for the printing plungers (1) may contain a cavity in which a heating element is accommodated.
