Abstract
1,212,493. Tandem axle assemblies. SCHWERMASCHINENBAU S.M. KIROW VEB. 22 April, 1969, No. 20472/69. Heading B7D. In a tandem axle assembly of a mobile crane or like vehicle, the axles 5, 6 are non-resiliently connected to one arm of respective bell-crank levers 1, 2 pivoted to the vehicle frame 3 at points 4, the other lever-arms being interconnected by a guide rod 28 slidably received in a tie rod 10, the sliding movement being resisted by a coil spring 12. The spring 12 acts between a disc 13 rigidly connected to the tie rod 10, and a disc 15 connected to the guide rod 28 by a support 18 and ties 16. The support 18 also mounts two hydraulic rams 19, the pistons of which are interconnected by a member 20. For travelling, the pistons are moved to the right (as seen in Fig. 1) so that the member 20 approaches the disc 15, and a member 23, rotatable but not axially displaceable with respect to the tie rod 10, is rotated so that keys 21 carried by a tube 22 rigidly connected to the member 23 correspond with slots 14 (Fig. 2, not shown) on the disc 15, thus allowing relative sliding movement between the tie and guide rods. For immobile load handling operations, the pistons of the rams 19 are moved to the left and the members 23 rotated through 90 degrees so that the member 20 abuts the member 23 to urge the disc 15 against the keys 21, thus locking the tie and guide rods.
