1,212,449. Centrifugal separators. DORYOKURO KAKUNENRYO KAIMATSU JIGYODAN. 25 Oct., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 50846/68. Heading B2P. A gas centrifuge for separating uranium-235 from other isotopes in natural uranium hexafluoride comprises a rotor 20 rotatably mounted in a casing 10 and having a hollow upper supporting shaft 23, through which a mixture of uranium hexafluoride and helium gas is fed to the rotor and a hollow lower supporting shaft 24 through which separated helium gas is removed from a central region of the rotor, the end plates 21, 22 of the rotor being provided with holes 25, 26 through which gas depleted in uranium-235 and gas enriched in uranium- 235 are respectively ejected into chambers A and B from which they are swept through extraction pipes 13, 14 by means of the helium gas removed through the hollow shaft 24 and tangentially introduced, through nozzles 12 at the end of feed pipes 11, into the annular space 50 between the rotor and the casing whence the helium gas flows into the chambers A, B via annular clearances 31, 32 between the end plates of the rotor and flange-shaped projecting parts 27, 28 of the casing. The ratio of helium gas to uranium hexafluoride varies from 1:1 to 3:1. The amounts of gas enriched and depleted in uranium-235 ejected from the rotor are equal and equal amounts of separated helium gas are fed to the chambers A, B. The gas mixture in the rotor is subjected to pressure diffusion by means of rotation of the rotor at a high velocity and to counter-current flow by means of a heating device 41 and a cooling device 42. The helium gas removed from the rotor may be purified in a centrifuge before it is fed to the space 50. A valve 19 in one of the feed pipes 11 ensures that the helium gas fed to the rotor is the same as that fed to the space 50. Vacuum. pumps are connected to the extraction pipes 13, 14. In carrying out an enrichment process a number of centrifuges are arranged in a cascade formation, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprising a central supply step, a number of enrichment steps for enrichment of the uranium hexafluoride in uranium-235 and a number of recovery steps for depleting uranium hexafluoride from uranium-235. The enriched gas mixed with helium gas is fed to a rotor performing the next step in the enrichment process while the depleted gas mixed with helium gas if fed back to another rotor performing the previous step.
