Abstract

121,229. Walker, M., and Boothroyd, H. T. Feb. 19, 1918. Clutches, friction.- In an electro-magnetic clutch applicable to automatic reversing-gearing for planing-machine tables &c., a number of guide-spindles B fixed to a movable armature B<1> slide in bearings in the magnet A<3> and in a ring B<3> fixed to the magnet by studs, which pass through openings in the armature. Friction surfaces C', C<5>, secured to the armature and magnet but lying outside the magnetic field of force, engage an annular disk D' on a spider mounted on a shaft A by means of spring-controlled spindles D. To accelerate the gripping of the clutch, a number of small magnets or solenoids E' mounted on the ring B<3> are in the electric circuit of the main magnet A<3> and are provided with armatures E<5> fixed to spindles E<6> of non-magnetic material which press against the back of the armature B<1>. The friction surface C' is adjusted for wear by bolts C. Vanes E on the spider create a current of air to cool the parts. The magnet A<3> is shown as integral with a driving-pulley A<1>, but it may be the driven member. The ring B<3>, being of magnetic material, acts as a magnetic screen, preventing the production of Foucault currents.
