Abstract
121,212. Hooton, W. Jan. 14, 1918. Exhaust-silencers.-An exhaust tube a is provided at intervals with by-pass tubes b, Fig. 1, the length of which is one or an odd number of half wave-lengths of the pulses passing through the main tube. The length of the by-pass tubes, and the corresponding length of the main tube, may be adjustable; or a number of by-pass tubes of different length may be provided. In modifications, the tube a is provided with a series of lateral pockets c, Fig. 3, or enlargements c, Fig. 5, and successive pockets or enlargements may be of diminishing size The length of the pockets is a half or a quarter wave-length of the pulses, or any multiplication or sub-multiple of a wavelength by which a pulse of condensation may be made to oppose a pulse of rarefaction. The tube a may be sinuous, with the enlargements situated side by side and formed by adjustable telescopic tubes.
