A grinding machine comprises a frame 12, Fig. 1, a grinding head 16 mounted on the frame and having a tracking roll 18 mounted for pivotable movement about a pivot axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the roll, an endless abrasive belt 22 carried by the roll 18 for movement in an orbital path, means mounted on the frame for oscillating the tracking roll 18 about its pivot axis, means carried by the head 16 for limiting the oscillating movement of the roll 18 within a given range, and means mounted on the head 16 for adjusting the limiting means for changing the range of oscillating movement of the tracking roll. In the machine described the roll 18 is mounted in a yoke 38 pivoted about a vertical pivot 48 under the action of pistons 54 of cylinders 50 situated one each side of the yoke and mounted on the frame 12. Air is supplied to one or other of the cylinders via a control valve 68, the position of the spool of which is determined by whether or not the belt 22 lies between an air jet 58 and a paddle 64. The yoke 38 carries an apertured extension 116, Fig. 2, which engages with stops 140, 134 to limit the oscillation of the roll 18. The stops 140, 134 are carried by the piston of a fluid cylinder 127 mounted on the head 16 so that if the extension 116 presses against either of the stops for a length of time the stops and hence the piston-rod move so that the range of oscillating movement of the roll 18 is changed.
