[Also in Divisions F4 and H5] A vacuum or inert gas filled furnace comprises a tiltable metal melting crucible 1, hermetically closed by a cover 2 supporting a consumable electrode 9 or other electric heating means, and one or more pouring chambers 15 hermetically connected to the melting crucible 1. Chambers 15 accommodate rotary tables 16 with moulds into which molten metal is poured from the pouring spout 3 of crucible 1 via a pouring trough 17. Around the crucible 1 is a water-cooled jacket 11 and a solenoid 12 for stirring the molten metal. The crucible 1 is connected to an exhausting device 7 or to a source of protective gas. The crucible 1 is mounted on trunnions 4 for turning by means of a drive mechanism 5 and a gear train 6. Instead of a consumable electrode 9, the heating may be by an electron-beam gun or a plasma torch, and a charge for melting can be loaded into the crucible.
