Abstract

1,211,860. Extruding composite pipes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Sept., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 45026/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A continuous process for the production of a laminar pipe having a foamed core and inner and outer surface layers comprises co-axially extruding two pipes of thermoplastic material and extruding a foaming synthetic resin into the cavity between the said two pipes. The laminar pipe may be prepared by dividing a stream of molten thermoplastic material into two annular concentric paths, cooling the material in these paths and extruding a foaming material between the formed pipes which emerge from the extruder, the resulting pipe assembly being drawn through a forming die by moving surfaces which grip the exterior surface of the pipe whilst the foaming material foams and sets. The foamed core acts to strengthen the pipe and acts as a heat insulant. Each pipe layer may be of the same material, the inner and outer layers of the same material and the foam core of a different material, or each of a different material. Suitable materials may be polymers of α-olefines such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene and poly-4-methyl pentene-1 and copolymers of two or more α- olefines such as ethylene, propylene, butene and 4-methypentene-1; polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride optionally containing a plasticizer; polymers and co-polymers of styrene, polymers and copolymers of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, butadiene, styrene copolymers. The thermoplastic material, especially that of the outer layer, may include a suitable filler such as asbestos fibres, glass fibres, glass plates or mica plates. The blowing agents for the foaming material may comprise liquid agents such as pentane and the halo- and polyhalo-hydrocarbons, e.g. methyl chloride, which may be incorporated by soaking the thermoplastic material in the liquid agent. Alternatively the blowing agent may be injected into the barrel of the extruder. The blowing agent may be a powdered, solid agent dry-blended with the thermoplastic. Suitable solid agents are the nitrogen gas liberating agents, such as azo and hydrazo compounds, and the carbon dioxide gas liberating agents, such as carbonates or bicarbonates.
