Abstract

1,211,658. Propellants. ALLIED RESEARCH ASSOCIATES Inc. 9 April, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 18057/69. Heading C1D. [Also in Division F3] A propellent composition containing embedded carbon filaments is used for making a combustible cartridge case (see Division F3). The propellant may be a mixture of ammonium perchlorate and rubber or a mixture of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine. The cartridge cases are made by extrusion, injection moulding, casting, or by impregnating carbon filament wrapped round a mandrel. A laminated structure may be formed consisting of layers of the mixture alternating with layers of propellant free from carbon filaments, and the laminate is moulded into the shape of a cartridge case. Before mixing the carbon filaments, the peopellant may be softened by heat or the addition of acetone. Up to 10% of glass fibres may also be present.
