Abstract

1,211,467. Fibre-reinforced aluminium alloys. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY. Oct. 29, 1968 [Nov. 2, 1967], No.51304/68. Headings C7A and C7D. An Al alloy containing Ce 5-15% by wt. is composed of an Al matrix having embedded therein fibres consisting of a Ce-Al compound. The alloy may be made by progressively and unidirectionally solidifying a melt. As shown, starting material is contained in downwardly-moved graphite crucible 1, the upper part of the material being in liquid form L due to furnace 2 and the lower part in solid form S due to water-spraying collar 3. Whiskers of Al4 Ce are thereby precipitated from the liquid phase. In other ways of making the alloy, Al4 Ce fibres are first produced and then infiltrated with molten Al, or cold-pressed with Al powder, or co-extruded with Al. In the example, the starting alloy consists of Al 90% and Ce 10%, the Ce also containing Pr 0À03%, Nd 0À02%, La 0À01%, Mg 0À005% and Fe 0À005%. Use.
