Abstract
1,211,289. Sugar acids; ascorbic acid. MERCK & CO. Inc. 2 Dec., 1968 [11 Dec. 1967], No. 56984/68. Headings C2C and C2V. α-C 1-6 alkyl sorbosides are contacted in aqueous alkaline solution with oxygen and a noble metal catalyst to give novel C 1-6 alkyl α - L - xylo - hexulopyranosidonic acids which are then hydrolysed and lactonized by heating in aqueous solution, optionally with the addition of acid, to give ascorbic acid.
