[Also in Division D1] A device for differentially heating or cooling an area of a sheet 7 for subsequent forming comprises a heated or cooled backing plate 5 to which is secured a heat-conductive body 1 having a stem 3 and an enlarged head having a convex sheet contacting surface 4 and tapering edges 2. Due to the difference in length of conduction paths from the backing plate to the surface various regions of the surface 4, the area of the sheet contacted by the surface 4 will have, in the case of a heated backing plate, a central hotter area, and in the case of a cooled backing plate, a central cooler area.
