Abstract
1,209,780. Transparent polycrystalline beryllia. NIPPON GAISHI K.K. 21 Dec., 1967 [22 March, 1967; 8 Sept., 1967], No. 58161/67. Heading C1A. A transparent polycrystalline beryllia body consists of BeO containing as an addition substance 0À01-1 wt. per cent of at least one colourless oxide whose melting-point is at least 1500‹ C., the density of the body is at least 99% of the maximum theoretical density, and the inline transmission of radiant energy per mm. of thickness of the beryllia is at least 10% in the wavelength range 0À003-6Á. The said oxide may be that of Li, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Sr, Y, Zr, Mo, La, or Th, or a mixture of any of these. A mixed powder of BeO and oxide may be prepared and sintered at 1400-1900‹ C., the mixed powder being prepared by calcining at less than 1300‹ C. either (a) beryllium hydroxide, acetate, carbonate, or sulphate plus the oxide, (b) beryllium oxide plus the appropriate metal nitrite, sulphate, or acetate or (c) a mixture of beryllium salts and metal salts. The sintering is carried out in a vacuum, or in a hydrogen atmosphere containing less than 1% moisture, and may be preceded by pre-sintering at 1000- 1500‹ C. for at least one hour.
