Abstract

1,209,374. Cutting apparatus for mining machines. H. M. MORROW. 13 Feb., 1968 [25 Sept., 1967], No. 7087/68. Heading E1F. Cutting apparatus comprises a bit holder 49 and a cutting bit 48, the holder having a first opening 56 for receiving a shank 52 of the bit and a second opening 61 intersecting the opening 56 for receiving a bit removing tool, the bit being releasably retained in the holder by a spring 54 disposed in a groove 53 in the bit and engaging the holder. The bit holder 49 is releasably retained in a main holder 26 by a spring 60 and the holder 26 is releasably secured in a socket 32 of a chain link 22 by a screw 34. The bit 48 is free to rotate in the holder 49 during use. In a second embodiment, Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown), a bit is releasably retained by a spring in a bush which is disposed within a holder, rotation between the bush and the holder being prevented by a key on the bush engaging a keyway in the holder.
