Abstract

1,209,370. Valves; pipe couplings. R. H. MURDOCK. 24 Dec., 1968, No. 61599/68. Headings F2G and F2V. A drain plug for an oil sump is attached to sump wall 6 and extends into the sump to house a piston valve 15 spring-biased to prevent flow from port 4 to the plug outlet 8. During draining, auxiliary plug 9 is removed and plastics or metal tube 2 is inserted such that extension 26 thereof lifts the valve to allow flow out through the tube. Spring clip 27 on tube 2 engages with its end 29 in recess 35 to retain the tube in place. The tube may initially be inserted with extension 26 on the same side of the longitudinal axis as port 4, in which case the extension covers the port and prevents flow until the tube is rotated through 180 degrees. The plug can be installed in the bottom or side wall of the sump and the port can face downwards or have a downwardly-opening shroud. A clip on the tube can alternatively engage a pin on flange 7. The tube can conduct the oil to a pump.
