In a trailer having a leading axle 1 connected to the rotatable part of a " fifth wheel " 7 whose fixed part is connected to the trailer frame 8 so that the axle 1 is always behind the rotational axis of the " fifth wheel " with respect to the direction of travel of the trailer regardless of what is that direction, the " fifth wheel " 7 mounts transversely spaced longitudinally extending guides 6 on each of which there is a displaceable sleeve 5 connected with the axle 1, or alternatively the axle mounts the guides and the " fifth wheel " mounts the sleeves. A leaf spring 2 serves to spring the suspension and locking means (not shown), may be provided to fix the axle in its two extreme positions.
