Abstract

1,208,163. Phenols. MONSANTO CO. 3 Jan., 1968 [3 Jan., 1967], No. 395/68. Heading C2C. A process for the manufacture of a phenol which comprises subjecting a gaseous mixture of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a free oxygencontaining gas to a silent electric discharge. In examples benzene, toluene and n-propylbenzene in admixture with air are subjected to the action of a silent electric discharge to obtain phenol, a mixture of cresols and a mixture of propyl phenols respectively. An apparatus for carrying out the process is described referring to the drawing (not shown).
