Abstract

1,207,674. Bottle corks. GRANTS OF ST. JAMES'S Ltd. 23 Feb., 1968 [14 March, 1967], No. 11999/67. Heading B8T. Bottle corks are sealed by treating them with an organosilicon compound, for example a silicone oil such as a methyl or methyl phenyl polysiloxane or a linear dimethyl polysiloxane. The corks may be soaked in an emulsion of the organosilicon compound in an aqueous medium and then dried, or alternatively dipped in a solution of the organosilicon compound in a volatile organic solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon such as light petroleum or trichloroethylene, drained, and dried. It is also possible to spray the corks with the emulsion. A preservative such as sodium metabisulphite or sulphur dioxide may be added to the emulsion or solution to sterilize the corks which may then be packed in hermeticallysealed sterile containers, e.g. polythene bags. The corks may be soaked in the emulsion in a sealed container and a vacuum applied, and it is also possible to apply a vacuum to the corks in the container in the dry state to remove air from the pores and then add the emulsion under vacuum.
