1,205,908. Detecting phosphorus pentoxide. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. 12 May, 1969 [13 May, 1968], No. 24148/69. Heading B1X. [Also in Divisions G1 and G2] A composition which changes colour in the presence of phosphorus pentoxide comprises 20 gms of 1% by weight hydroxyethyl cellulose in distilled water. 0.20 gms glycerol. 0.040 gms brom cresol green. 0.080 gms sodium bicarbonate. Other water-soluble binders may be used in place of hydroxyethyl cellulose, and the glycerol may be replaced by another polar liquid such as tri- or tetra-ethylene glycol. The dye may be another acid-sensitive material such as brom thymol blue.
