Abstract
1,205,652. Coating materials. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 3 Dec., 1968 [4 Dec., 1967], No. 55100/67. Heading C1M. A glassy material, for coating or bonding a material having approximately the same thermal expansion coefficient, comprises a mixture of at least one uncrystallized solder glass and at least one devitrified glass, in proportions such that it has a net thermal expansion coefficient of not more than 50 Î 10<SP>-7</SP> per ‹C. at room temperature, when fused into a solid mass, the devitrified glass or glasses being chosen to have a resultant coefficient of not more than 30 x 10<SP>-7</SP> per ‹C. The resultant coefficient is the average of the coefficients of each devitrified glass weighted according to their relative proportions. The devitrified glass(es) preferably constitutes 20-80% of the weight of the material. Preferably, the two glasses are powdered and mixed and coated on the substrate by suspending them in a suitable liquid, e.g. methylated spirit and ammonia, and heating to fuse the material. Glass, ceramics, glass-ceramics or other non-metallic substrates, e.g. silicon, may be coated or joined with the material. Examples describe the joining of tubes of borosilicate glass or fused silica articles.
