Abstract

A garment ironing and finishing device comprises means 7, 8, 9 for suspending the collar or other opening by and closing the opening, a narrow heatable rail 17 and clamp 18 to receive edges with buttons or button holes and stretching means for insertion in lower opening or openings of the garment through which heated air or steam are forced, no gas-permeable bag being provided to be inflated within the garment. A tube 3 telescopes in a tube 2 mounted on housing 1 and is biassed upwardly by springs 6. Mounted on top of tube 3 is a shirt neck holding member comprising a base plate 7 with two integral side plates and two movable tension plates 8, 9 having side plates and bolts 11 slidable in slots in plate 7 parallel with its side plates. The side plates of plates 7, 8 and 9 together form a triangular form which is biassed to its smallest size. Bolts 12 on plates 8, 9 engage slots 16 in a member 15 secured to the piston 14 of a cylinder 13 so that supply of fluid, e.g. oil to cylinder 13 moves members 8, 9 upwards and outwards to fit a shirt neck placed thereon. A clothes hanger may be placed below the holding member. Articulated to member 3 is the steam or electrically heated rail 17 and clamp 18 is normally raised through a lever system by springs 19 and is held pressed against the garment by a flap 20 and bolt 21. Secured to housing 1 are plates 22 with which co-operate U-shaped movable tension pieces 23 each articulated to four rods 24 so pivoted as to maintain the faces 25 of pieces 23 vertical, the latter being biassed away from plates 22 and operated by foot pedal 32 to bring pieces 23 between plates 22. Pedal 32 is held in this position by a member 35 and releasable by a second pedal 33. A pedal 39 operates an air inlet valve 42 in a pipe 41 which delivers warm air into the space within plates 22 and 23. Pedal 39 is held depressed and hence the valve is held open. On depressing foot pedal 51 against spring 52, the piston in cylinder 53 is lowered and hence the piston 14 in cylinder 13 connected to cylinder 53 is moved downwards so that the triangular form can contract. Articulated to each side of housing 1 is a tube 57 into which telescopes a tube 58 at whose end is articulated a rod 59 which can be fixed as desired and carries a clamp 60, 62 or the shirt' sleeves. In operation, pedal 51 is depressed and the neck part of a shirt is placed on the triangular form and buttoned up or held by its button and buttonhole respectively in groove 67 of tab 66 and on pin 65. The button and button hole edges are placed on bar 17 and held by clamp 18. Pedal 32 is depressed and tension pieces 23 are pulled between plates 22 and then released to hold the lower edge of the garment. The sleeves or cuffs are clamped by members 60, 62 and tube 57 and rod 59 adjusted to stretch the sleeves. Pedal 39 is depressed and valve 42 is opened so that warm air is blown into the garment.
