Abstract

1,205,646. Gas blast switches; contacts. E. LANGE. 22 Sept., 1967 [26 Sept., 1966], No. 43309/67. Heading H1N. A gap across which an arc can occur comprises two electrodes 5, 6 each of which includes a metallic material; at least one of which contains a non-metallic material which evolves an arc extinguishing gas when heated by the arc; and at least one of which contains an inorganic, non-metallic material having a high melting point and not evolving an arc extinguishing gas when heated by the arc. Each electrode may contain both non-metallic materials; or one electrode may contain each material; or each electrode may have two parts (Fig. 2, not shown) one containing each material. As shown the gap is in parallel with an electric switch 2, 3, 4 the movable contact 4 of which carries an arcing tip which may also contain the non-metallic materials. The gap may alternatively be in a lightning arrester or a fuse. The metallic material may be nickel, silver or copper; the gas evolving material may be a mixture of polytetrafluoroethylene and sulphur as described in Specification 1,100,564 or fluorspar (calcium fluoride) and ferric ammonium sulphate; the other non-metallic material may be quartz (silica), alumina, steatite or dolomite. These materials in powdered form may be bound together by an epoxy impregnating resin mixture. In a modification (Fig. 3), not shown, two series connected gaps are mounted side by side, the electrode of one gap including the gas evolving material and those of the other gap including the other material.
