Abstract

120,532. Almfelt, K. J. July 16, 1918. Ball bearings.-The spindle of a grinding-machine, machine tool, &c., is mounted in a sleeve 13 with ball bearings at each end, and one or both sets of bearings comprise two rows of balls, the outer races of which are pressed apart to take up wear by a split ring 18 contracted by a wedge 21 on an adjustable end cap 20. The inner and outer surfaces of the ring may be conical or spherical; if spherical, the bearing is self-alining. One set of bearings is movable axially to allow for expansion, either by a bush 16 loose on the spindle, or by a ring moving axially in the sleeve 13. The end caps are locked in the adjusted positions bv spring pins 40 projecting inwardly or outwardly into recesses. In a modification, the wedge 21 is separate from the cap 20 and embraces the conical exterior of the ring 18, which has a projecting bearing against a shoulder on the sleeve 13. In another form, the ring 18 is cylindrical externally and is surrounded by a split conical ring contracted by the wedge 21.
