Abstract

1,204,198. Chlorination process. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 7 Nov., 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 52511/67. Heading CIA. Finely divided titaniferous materials (those containing titanium dioxide) are chlorinated in a fluidized bed, in the presence of a reducing agent and an added source of potassium, chromium, lanthanum or vanadium. The preferred additive is a chromium source such as chromite ore. A source of calcium, manganese or cerium may be used in conjunction with the previously mentioned additives. Suitable amounts of primary and secondary additive are between 0À01% and 2.5%, giving a permissible total of 5% of additives based on the weight of titanium dioxide in the titaniferous material, and the preferred titaniferous material is rutile. Additives may be either blended with the titaniferous material without wetting and drying, or they may be added in aqueous solution, the addition being followed by oven drying. The reaction may be carried out at temperatures between 800‹ and 1400‹ C. The reducing agent may be a solid form of carbon having a suitable particle size for fluidization, and is preferably coke.
