Abstract
1,203,629. Rollers; clutches. PAPETERIE DE STENAY. 22 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966: 3 May, 1967], No. 53163/67. Headings F2C and F2U. A hollow roll, e.g. for rolling, calendering, embossing, glazing, coating, printing, drying, or grinding, comprises a rotatable cylindrical shell 1, a fixed or rotatable shaft 2 substantially on the axis of rotation of the shell, and, between the shaft and the shell, inflatable annular chambers 6a-6n or other resilient means capable of exerting a uniform radial pressure on the shell at any given radial plane connected to external pressure control means (not shown). The chamber pressures are controlled to maintain a predetermined axial pressure distribution along the nip between the hollow roll and a second roll 3. In Fig. 4, each annular chamber consists of a pneumatic tyre on a wheel 5a-5n the hub 12a-12n of which is secured to the shaft 2. Separate lines 9a-9n connect the tyres to the pressure control means. Shaft 2 is driven via a coupling 8, and may be bent longitudinally by forces f1, f2 to assist in obtaining the required axial pressure distribution at the nip. The tyres may be inflated and deflated to engage and disengage the drive to the shell 1. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the shaft (2) is not rotatable and the wheels are supported thereon by bearings (14a-14n). In Fig. 7 (not shown), a curved shaft (2) carrying bearings (14a-14n) for the wheels is rotatably adjustable to adjust the axial pressure distribution at the nip. In Fig. 8 (not shown), the wheels are omitted, the tyres (6a-6n) being supported directly on a large diameter rotatable shaft (2). The shell 1 may be a plain tube of steel, bronze, aluminium alloy, or plastics, and may have a resilient rubber or plastics lining. Alternatively, Fig. 9, for greater resilience, the shell may be a longitudinally slotted tube covered with a flexible sleeve (17), (Fig. 10, not shown) of rubber, plastics, or thin steel or other metal. In Figs. 11-14 (not shown), the roll is mounted inside a hollow cylindrical roll to apply the latter against a counter roll. In Fig. 11 the roll (102) has a diameter almost equal to the internal diameter of the hollow roll (100) and is rotatable. In Fig. 12 a stationary roll (112) acts via a needle bearing (117) against the internal surface of a hollow roll (111). In Fig. 13 a small rotatable roll (122) acts on the internal wall of a hollow roll (121), and in Fig. 14 a similar small roll (132) is carried at one vertex of a triangular frame (135), loose rollers (136) at the other two vertices also engaging the internal surface of a hollow roll (131).
