Abstract

1,203,328. Anti-tumour compositions containing mycophenolicacid and 6-mercaptopurine. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 April, 1969 [4 June, 1968; 17 Oct., 1968; 24 Feb., 1969], Nos. 26562/68, 49283/68 and 9689/69. Addition to 1,157,100. Heading A5B. Pharmaceutical compositions having antitumour and immunosuppressive activity comprise mycophenolic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, 6-mercaptopurine and an inert, non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier. The mycophenolic acid salt may be an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt. The composition may also contain a substance which is known to inhibit the conversion of 6-mercaptopurine into thiouric acid e.g. allopurinol or 6, 8-dihydroxy-2-methylthiopurine. The compositions may be administered parenterally or orally e.g. in the form of tablets or capsules. A tumour resistant to the action of 6-mercaptopurine by virtue of a deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl transferase is treated by administering to an animal excluding man mycophenolic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
