Abstract

1,203,342. α-Alumina whiskers. GENERAL TECHNOLOGIES CORP. 13 Feb., 1968, No. 7003/68. Heading CIA. A mat of interconnected groups of α-Al 2 O 3 single crystal fibres, each of said groups containing a plurality of fibres connected at a common point and having at least some of the fibres enmeshed with the fibres of another group or groups, the common points of the individual groups being spaced apart at one surface of the mat, the other surface of the mat being covered with the separate enmeshed fibres, is made by passing H 2 /water vapour over a melt of aluminium in a ceramic receptacle provided with a loosely fitting cover of ceramic material. The temperature of the melt may be 2200-3500‹ F. but preferably the melt is heated at a steadily increasing temperature between 2500-3100‹ F. during a run of about one hour. In the preferred embodiment, H 2 gas containing less than 50 p.p.m. water, is initially passed at a rate of 0À01-0À06 cu. ft./ sec. for about 10 minutes and the rate is then reduced to 0À001-0À003 cu. ft./sec. and a water content increased to 300 p.p.m. In the final growth stage the hydrogen rate is further decreased to 0.0001 cu. ft./sec. and the water content increased to 3000 p.p.m., although up to 40,000 p.p.m. is permissible. The product is formed on the cover and yield may be enhanced by using oxides of Al, Si, Fe, Ti, Zr, Cr or Co in the manufacture of the ceramic material. The density of mat varies with the distance between the said cover and the aluminium charge and with the metallic aluminium content of the cover. Secondary fibres may be formed amongst the enmeshed fibres and the mat may be embedded in plastics, ceramic or metal materials.
