Abstract

1,202,923. Finishing rope ends. UNION LIGHTERAGE CO. Ltd. 8 Aug., 1968 [21 June, 1967], No. 28604/67. Heading D1T. A rope end of synthetic fibres is finished off by heating said end sufficiently to cause synthetic polymer filaments present at the surface of the rope end to fuse together whilst a torque is applied to the rope tending to rotate the end of the rope in the direction of the rope lay. The synthetic polymer filaments may be in the form of a whipping applied to a synthetic fibre rope. Alternatively the synthetic polymer filaments are filaments forming part of the rope itself so that end whipping of the rope is not essential. The fusing operation may be effected by inserting the rope end into a rotating heated die member. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the rotatable die member (5) is heated by a gas nozzle (19), and a circular guide member (7) is positioned such that a rope passing therethrough will enter the heated rotating die (5). A tank (22) of water is positioned below the guide member (7) so that the rope end can be wetted. In operation the rope end is passed through the guide (7) and into the heated rotating die (5), quickly withdrawn and dipped into the water in the tank (22). Thereafter the rope end is again passed through the guide (7) and into the die (5) where the water is converted into steam to prevent the melted polymer from sticking to the die. The operation may then be repeated, each insertion of the rope end into the die being preceded by dipping it into said tank (22).
