Abstract

1,202,791. Vehicle electrical systems. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 5 Jan., 1968, No. 749/68. Heading H2H. A vehicle electrical system comprising a threephase star-connected alternator 1 charging a battery 23 by way of a rectifier 11 is provided with a lamp 31 which is illuminated when the alternator is not charging but which is extinguished when the alternator output is above a predetermined limit. When the alternator is not being driven closure of an ignition switch 33 connects the lamp 31 to the battery 23 and, since a transistor 29 is non-conductive when the alternator 1 is not generating, the lamp 31 is illuminated. As the output of the alternator increases the base of the transistor receives an increasing signal from the star point of the alternator whereby the transistor becomes increasingly conductive. Thus, when the output of the alternator is above a predetermined amount, the transistor 29 is fully conductive and the lamp 31 extinguishes. The transistor may be replaced by a thermistor or the lamp connected across a diagonal of a resistance bridge one arm of which includes the transistor. Alternatively two arms of the bridge may be formed by batteries. If desired, a voltage regulator may be incorporated into the system in which ease the star point of the alternator is disconnected from the base of the transistor for part of each charging cycle.
