Abstract

1,202,504. Container closure; closing resilient containers. A. M. HERZIG, and B. D. MENKIN. 13 Feb., 1969, No. 7928/69. Headings B8D and B8T. An automatic closure for a squeeze container such as 40 made for example from PVC, polyethylene or a rubbery material, is produced by welding closed one end of a tubular sleeve at 12, punching holes 15 and 16 in the welded area, inserting the legs of a staple 24 into the holes, laterally stretching the sleeve, bending the legs of the staple up to retain the sleeve in the stretched condition, removing the excess welded material and finally bowing the staple to bias the lips in the closure 13 thus formed to a closed position. The above operations are effected by a device comprising a pair of laterally slidable blocks 60 and 65 each carrying a bifurcated anvil member 84 and 90 the limbs 85, 85<SP>1</SP> (not shown) and 91, 91<SP>1</SP> (not shown) of which straddle on upper anvil plate 29 mounted upon a member 72. The blocks also each carry a lower bifurcated gripping jaw 98, 99 and 98<SP>1</SP>, 99<SP>1</SP> the jaws being carried by bell crank levers 96 and 96<SP>1</SP> the rear arms 103, 103<SP>1</SP> of which are biased towards each other by spring 106 and carry cam followers 104, 104<SP>1</SP> actuated by the vertical movement of a head 143. Located between the blocksis a lower die member 30 vertically reciprocated by means of an internally located lever system actuated by a plunger the head 136 of which is actuated by member 141 of head 143. In operation the head 143 is lowered so that the jaws 98, 99 and 98<SP>1</SP>, 99<SP>1</SP> first pivot upwardly to grip the neck against the limbs of the anvil members and the blocks then move outwardly to stretch the gripped neck. Further movement of the head causes the followers 104 to ride over surfaces 152 of the head so that no further stretching occurs, the further movement causing the member 141 to depress head 136 thereby raising the lower die member 30 to bend the legs of the staple into contact with the underside of the neck.
