Abstract

1,202,225. Valves; hydraulic shock absorbers. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. 8 Aug., 1967, No. 36301/67. Headings F2S and F2V. A foot valve assembly for an hydraulic shock absorber comprises a body 26 having a spigot 24 whereby it can be plugged into the end of an inner piston-containing cylinder (10) of the absorber, and an annular cup-shaped member 52 which is retained to the body, through an inturned flange at one end, by the loading spring 47 of a valve 46. An out-turned flange 54 at the other end of the member 52 retains a biasing spring 43 of a second valve 42. The second valve comprises a plate which allows filling of the inner cylinder, through passages 40 and spaces 28 formed between castellations 26 of the body, from an annular chamber enclosed by an outer cylinder (12). The first valve relieves pressure in the inner cylinder upon abrupt inward movements of the piston, and comprises a blind sleeve 25 ported at 48 and having a head 46 which engages a seating 36. In an alternative embodiment, the loading spring 47 is replaced by a spring on the opposite side of the body and the cup member is retained by the head of a stem which extends through the body and locates a spring retainer at its other end.
