Abstract
1,201,671. Dipsticks. MOELLER MFG. CO. Inc. Feb.5, 1968, No.5745/68. Heading G1H. An oil level dipstick having a closure body 20 for closing the oil filler pipe of an internal combustion engine comprises a resilient, compressible plug 23, upper and lower compression plates 27 and 26 respectively and a rotatable rod 22 to which the dipstick 21 is attached. The rod 22 is secured to a knob 31 and is located in a bore 24 in the plug. The plate 26 is secured to the plug 23 by tongues 52 and has a screw threaded sleeve 28 so that rotation of the knob 31 cause the plate 26 to compress the plug, sealing ribs 25 on the plug engaging the inner wall of the filler pipe. A weld 34 secures the dipstick to the rod 22 which is crimped at 33 to prevent downward movement of the plate 26. A longitudinal groove is provided in the closure body 20 to vent the engine crankcase. In a modification a screw threaded plug is secured to the bottom of the dipstick to receive a magnet for extracting bits of metal from the oil. Several modifications of the method of securing the dipstick to the closure body, including a flexible coupling, are described. Guide washers attached to the dipstick are also described.
