Abstract

1.200,628. Sterilizing process. REYNOLD METALS CO. 14 Nov., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. 51792/67. Heading A2D. [Also in Division A5] Materials, especially foodstuffs, which are contained within flexible, impermeable packaging, e.g. aluminium foil containers, are sterilized by autoclaving in an autoclave chamber by means of high pressure steam and an additional presurizing gas, e.g. air, the chamber being continuously vented during sterilization to control the total pressure therein. Suitable apparatus together with an appropriate control system is described. The articles to be sterilized are preferably subjected to motion within the autoclass during the process to avoid the effects of "cold" and "hot" spots; and a rotating framework, to which packages may be clamped by their edges and which may be contained within the autoclass, is also described.
