Abstract

1,200,421. Milling machine. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 19 April, 1968 [20 April, 1967], No. 18539/68. Headings B3B and B3K. A milling machine comprises a hollow arm 7 adapted to extend within the bore of a tubular workpiece 20 and carrying at one end a milling cutter 11 the axis of which is normal to that of the arm, the milling cutter being rotated by a transmission 14 housed within the hollow arm. The arm 7 is supported at one end in a carriage 5 which slides by means of linear ball-bearings 4 on guide bars 3, 3a the carriage 5 being fed by fluid pressure cylinder 36 and ram 38. The arm 7 also slides in a stationary bearing 10 and has an extension rod 33 guided in a back rest or centre 26. The workpiece, e.g. a tubular graphite jacket for a nuclear reactor is held at its ends in an indexible chuck or vice 22 and in the back centre 26 and is supported intermediate its ends in V-block supports 34, 34a. The chuck 22 is indexible by means of a fluid pressure-operated rack 42 and gear 44 with a fluid pressure-operated locking finger 48. The back centre 26 is laterally adjustable by means of a fluid pressure ram 30, 31. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), the cutter and arm are stationary and the workpiece supporting carriage is fed longitudinally by a fluid-pressure ram. Suction and blowing facilities may be provided for the removal of cuttings. The machine may be constructed with the arm disposed vertically.
