[Also in Division D1] The position of a machine shaft is adjusted, after normal operation of the machine has ceased, by a device comprising a fluid-operated piston-cylinder unit adapted to transmit rotary motion in a given direction to said shaft, and a sensing unit on said shaft adapted to operate a valve in the supply system to said piston-cylinder unit. To position the needle of a sewing machine 5, after the latter has come to rest at the end of a sewing operation, a switch 30 is closed to energize a solenoid valve 8 for cutting off air supply to a piston-cylinder unit 32. Value means 7, hitherto held in a left hand position by unit 32 acting via diaphragm means 31, is thereby moved by spring means to a right hand position for respectively applying air pressure to a piston-cylinder unit (41) adapted to actuate a lover to release the brake on the machine main shaft, to a piston-cylinder unit (36) mounted in a structure 2 at the free end of the piston-rod 3 of a cylinder 1 to clamp the driving belt 4 within the structure 2, and to cylinder 1 for operating piston-rod 3 and thereby driving machine 5 until the electrical circuit associated with solenoid valve 8 is interrupted by an insulating segment in slip ring means 10 on the main shaft. The stopping position is selected by actuation of a switch 18. It is stated that the arrangement may be applied to other machinery such as looms.
