Abstract
1,200,064. Cu-Bi alloys. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec.11, 1968 [Dec.12, 1967], No.56414/67. Heading C7A. The contact surface portion of a vacuum interrupter consists of a Cu alloy with Bi 0À05-1% by weight in which are dispersed particles of degassed 'refractory' metal (melting point higher than the boiling point of Cu) such as W, Mo or Ta. The material may be made by melting together Cu and Bi, introducing refractory particles ranging in size from 1-100 microns and making up 5-30% of the total volume, allowing to solidify into an ingot, and finally forming a billet by extrusion at 300‹- 950‹ C. The particles reduce the current-chopping tendency of the alloy.
