Abstract
1299563 Cables GENERAL CABLE CORP 5 March 1971 6091/71 Heading H1A An electrical cable has a conductor 10, a polyethylene semi-conducting shield 12 and insulation 14 comprising an ethyleno-propylene rubber compound which fusion bonds to the shield. Other layers of semi-conducting and insulating materials, 16, 18, respectively, may be present. The ethylene-propylene rubber compound preferably contains polyethylene for fusion bonding to the shield. The conductor 10 may be stranded and the shield desirably presents a smooth surface to the ethylene-propylene rubber compound which is cured and bonded to the shield. The lack of shrinkage of the ethylene-propylene rubber compound ensures that the shield is free of any radial pressure, which is therefore not forced into the interstices of the stranded conductor. The ethylenepropylene rubber compound can contain 20 to 80% by weight of ethylene-propylene copolymer and 0 to 49% by weight of polyethylene, the balance being reinforcing and filler materials. The conductor shield can be a cross-linked polyethylene with a higher softening point than that of the insulation before curing. Dicumyl peroxide can be included in the insulation and shield compounds so that the shield and insulation can be cross-linked to one another. The shield and insulation are preferably applied in a tandem extrusion process and cured simultaneously (Figs. 2, 3, not shown).
