Abstract

1298750 Laminates KALLE AG 21 Dec 1970 [22 Dec 1969] 60496/70 Addition to 1289086 Heading B5N A modification of the method of making a flexible laminate described in parent Specification 1,289,086 comprises (a) applying a heatsealable layer of polyurethane to the surface of a supporting film of plastics material having a softening temperature above 130‹ C. and being of sufficient chemical and chemical resistance to undergo the process, the sealing temperature of the polyurethane being below the softening temperature of said supporting film and said polyurethane layer consisting exclusively of polyurethane or up to 50% of a different polymer; (b) applying the supporting film carrying the said heat-sealable polyurethane layer under heat and pressure to a multi-layer material having an outer surface of a microporous polymer wherein the heat-sealable polyurethane layer is contacted with the said microporous layer; and (c) drawing off the supporting film from the resulting assembly at a temperature below the sealing temperature of the scalable layer leaving the flexible laminate. A further layer or layers of heat-sealable elastomer, suitably polyurethane, may be superposed on the heat-sealable polyurethane to produce a composite layer on the supporting film. The polyurethane layer(s) may contain polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinylidene chloride, polyamide, cellulose esters or a copolymer of vinylethylene chloride and acrylonitrile. The heat-sealable layer may also contain inorganic pigments or wax-like fatty acid amides or alcohols containing between 8 and 20 carbon atoms. Suitable supporting films are polyamides, polyimides, polyvinylidene chloride, polyacrylonitrile, polyformaldehyde, polyhalogenated hydrocarbon and polyethylene glycol terephthalate; said films being preferably oriented. Cellulosic films may also be used, the films may contain pigments to provide a roughened surface. The heat-sealable polyurethane may be applied from solution and is preferably formed in situ on the surface. The polyurethane in contact with the supporting film is preferably cross-linked, e.g. by adding excess of the NCO component to the solution applied to the surface of the film. The heatsealable layer and microporous layers may be contacted between the heated rollers at a temperature of between 135‹ and 180‹ C. at a pressure of up to 200 kgs. The microporous surface may be pre-heated and one of the rollers may be embossed. In the examples, the microporous surface which may be of polyurethane is supported by a chemically bonded mat of polyethylene terephthalate fibres.
