1298681 Measuring external dimensions DAVY-UNITED ENG CO Ltd 18 March 1970 [22 May 1969] 26076/69 Heading G1M An apparatus for measuring an external dimension of an article 12 comprises a horizontal surface 13 for supporting the article, a member 17 positioned above the supporting surface, a pair of probes 20, 21 carried by the member and movable independantly of each other relative to the member along a horizontal path or pair of horizontal parallel paths, separate means 52 for driving each probe means 60 for stopping the drive means when the probe associated therewith abuts an article on the surface, means for determining the position of each probe relative to a datum position and means for computing the separation of the probes. As described, framework 14 of H or I girders comprises uprights 15 and cross-member 16. Horizontal box section beam 17 slides in opposite channels 25 of the uprights, being moved vertically by double acting piston and cylinder unit 30 through chains 36, 37 over sprockets 38. At the middle of the beam, probe 18, for determining vertical dimensions, operates limit switch 42 when the beam, in descending, brings probe 18 into contact with the top surface of an article being measured. Limit switch 42 then stops the supply of fluid to cylinder 30 and thus stops movement of beam 17. Selsyn transmitter unit 40 operated by sprockets 38 transmits to an electrical recorder the vertical movement of the beam 17 which thus gives the height of the article. Probes 20, 21 are mounted on brackets 50 running in slides 51, moved by double acting pistons cylinder units 52. Probes 20, 21 operate limit switches 60 to stop travel of the respective brackets 50 when they contact the article being measured, and again Selsyn transmitter units, operated by pinions 55 running in racks 54, determine the movement of each probe and hence give the width of the article. Further limit switches 43, 61, 61 stop the beam 17 and both probe brackets 50 at the limit of their backward travel.
