Abstract
1298568 Moving coil instruments; diaphragms AUDIO ARTS Inc 18 Dec 1969 [18 Dec 1968] 61784/69 Heading H4J A loud-speaker or other electroacoustic transducer has a permanent magnet 12 (Fig. 2), opposite poles of which contact elongate pole members 6, 7 of U-shaped cross-section to form elongate air gaps 10 providing fixed magnetic fields. The dimensions are such that substantially all the magnetic flux will transfer within the air gaps rather than outside the air gaps. A voice coil conductor 15 is supported in the air gaps by a former 13. The conductor 15 is of copper, aluminium or silver. A diaphragm 3, preferably planar, is secured to the former 13 and is held by a rigid support 16. The air gaps 10 may alternatively be filled with rubber, plastics foam or other resilient material (Fig. 3, not shown) to support the former (13) and diaphragm (3). The diaphragm (3) is then itself rigid and not otherwise supported. Alternatively, the diaphragm 18<SP>11</SP> (Fig. 6) is selfsupporting and is of tubular form and the electromagnetic driver is contained within it. Folds permit vibration of the diaphragm 18<SP>11</SP>. If desired, resilient members 25 are provided to aid in restoring the diaphragm 18<SP>11</SP> to its neutral position. Resilient material 17<SP>11</SP> supports the coil 15<SP>11</SP> and former. Alternatively, the diaphragm 18<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 8) has semicylindrical supports 21<SP>1</SP> of cambric cloth and the driver part 20<SP>1</SP> is of polycarbonate. In another embodiment, semicylindrical ends (26), Fig. 9 (not shown), support the ends of the diaphragm (18<SP>1</SP>) in addition to the semicylindrical side supports (21). The diaphragm may be of graduated cross-section or may be perforated, the holes being covered with a taut film.
