Abstract

1298384 Expanding sleeves on to cores; rollers MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 11 March 1970 [12 March 1969] 11755/70 Headings F2S and F2U [Also in Divisions B6 and C3] An inking roller of a printing press comprises a core with an enlarged intermediate cylindrical portion 2 and a shrunk-on polyurethane composition sleeve 3, which may be applied by enclosing the sleeve, which preferably has a diameter before application which is at least 10% less than that of the core, in a hollow cylinder 4 with end seals, exhausting air to cause the sleeve to expand, inserting the core and allowing the sleeve to shrink into position on the core. The seals at the ends of the cylinder 4 may be made by lapping the ends of the sleeve 3 over the ends of the cylinder 4, or by caps. Preferably the sleeve 3 has been made by wrapping on a mandrel and curing, and has a glassy surface which was derived from the mandrel and is turned to the outside of the sleeve by eversion before the sleeve is applied to the core. An example of a suitable polyurethane composition is given, and examples of acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer and 2-chlorobutadiene 1, 3 based compositions are given for contrast.
