Abstract

1298353 Separating particles COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 21 April 1970 [22 April 1969] 20380/69 Heading G1A A method or apparatus of sorting particulate material comprising passing the material along a path inclined to the vertical and through a beam of high energy electromagnetic radiation, detecting the quantities of radiation transmitted through the particles, and, deriving electric signals characteristic of the nature of the particles, said signals controlling the operation of a gaseous jet which deflects selected material from the path of movement. In the Fig. shown, for separating shale from coal, the raw coal and shale is delivered by a chute 20 to a vibratory feeder 22 and thence to a chute 24 having eight discrete channel paths from which the particles fall in free-flight parabolic trajectories 26 and pass through an opening in box 11. The particles pass through X- rays from a X-ray tube 10 supplied by an electric power-pack and control unit 13. The radiation is directed along the box 11 to a bank of eight radiation detectors. The radiation transmitted through the particles will depend on their nature and the detectors are arranged to discriminate between coal and shale and when necessary operate the appropriate air valve 32, in series of eight nozzles 30 and supply pipes 34, to blow the piece of shale into a container 36.
