Abstract
1298248 1,3,5 - Tris[alpha - (alkylperoxy)- isopropyl]benzene; phosphite esters PENNWALT CORP 16 Nov 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 54438/70 Headings C2C and C2P A liquid tris-peroxide composition consisting predominantly of 1,3,5-tris - [α - (alkylperoxy)- isopropyl] - benzene is prepared by (a) heating a tertiary hydroxyalkyl acetylene of the formula R<SP>1</SP>-C#CH, where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or cycloalkyl group containing a hydroxy group substituted on a tertiary carbon atom, in solution in an inert solvent in the presence of nickel tetracarboxyl and a triaryl phosphite of the formula (R n ArO) 3 P where Ar is phenyl or naphthyl, R is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, and n is an integer of from 1 to 4 when Ar is phenyl or zero or an integer from 1 to 6 when Ar is naphthyl, with the proviso that, in each Ar group, one position adjacent to the oxygen-attached carbon atom is unsubstituted; (b) treating the crystalline product of (a) in solution in a substantially non- aqueous solvent and in the presence of a strong acid with sufficient t-alkyl hydroperoxide to peroxidize substantially all the hydroxy groups present in the crystalline product and (c) recovering from the product of (b) a liquid trisperoxide-containing composition consisting predominantly of 1,3,5 - tris - [α - (alkylperoxy)- isopropyl]-benzene. The triaryl phosphites may be prepared from the appropriate phenol and phosphorus trichloride. The trisperoxide compositions may be used as cross-linking agents for organic polymers.
