Abstract

1298199 Boilers CURWEN & NEWBERY Ltd 11 Feb 1970 7841/69 Heading F4A A boiler comprises a combustion chamber having a disconnectable duct through which combustion gases flow to tubes in a heat exchanger containing a fluid surrounding the tubes, to be heated. In one embodiment a combustion chamber 13 and heat exchanger sections 19, 20, 21 containing smoke tubes 24, are formed from cylindrical steel shells welded to a rigid frame 11 by brackets (14), Fig. 2 (not shown), and loose fitting steel dowels (15) which permit movement to allow for expansion. The fluid, e.g. water, enters a jacket (31) in the combustion chamber 13 through pipes 32 and is distributed to the sections 19, 20, 21 by pipes 33, header 34 and pipes 35, 36 each pipe having bolted flanges 37 with elongated slots, or stainless steel bellows to permit expansion. Each of the shells are closed by removable cleaning plates (29) bolted to flanges (30). Gases from a removable oil, gas or solid fuel burner (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), pass through ducts 23, 24 to sections 19, 20 and via ducts 26, 27 to section 21. Each section has smoke tubes 24, smoke boxes 28 and may have baffles (56), Fig. 7 (not shown), to increase the heat transfer. Each duct has an expansion joint 27 with an asbestos fibre packing, or in the form of a bellows. Steam or hot water leaves through outflows 38 to, e.g. a turbine or central heating system. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the heat exchanger (45) is below the combustion chamber 13. Two parallel heat exchange sections (41), (42) may also be included. In a third embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), sections (50), (51), (53), (54) are located in vertical pairs between larger sections (52), (55). In a final embodiment (not shown ), three sections are located horizontally above and below twin combustion chambers. One or more heat exchanger sections may be used as a superheater and may include an instantaneous water heater, e.g. of the flash tube type and/or a built in calorifier. The boiler may be installed in a ship. Instead of having a burner, the combustion chamber may receive gases from, e.g. a retort, incinerator or internal combustion engine.
