Abstract

1298143 Attaching filter plugs to cigarettes AMF Inc 25 March 1970 [29 April 1969] 14382/70 Heading A2C Pairs of axially aligned cigarette lengths S1 S2 with an interposed double-length filter F are transferred at a point T from a rotary drum 10 to a rotary drum 1 on which they are united by connector sheets 9 cut by a wheel 8 from a paper strip 7, the sheets being gummed before reaching the transfer point T and being held on a central part of the drum, between aligned pairs of projections 5, by suction applied through holes 106 in the drum and passages 302, 3 in a fixed cylindrical body 2 on which the drum is rotatable. The cigarette pairs and filters are deposited on the drum at the trailing sides of the projections 5 and held by suction applied through holes 205 in the drum and passages 102, 202, 3 in the body 2. The passages 102, 202, 302, which are in the form of arcuate recesses on the surface of the body 2, terminate at a point where a cigarette pair comes into contact with a surface 111 so that the suction holding that pair is interrupted while the pair is rolled for the uniting operation. The surface 111, which may be heated, is formed on a member 11 which is pivotally mounted to facilitate cleaning &c. Suction is also interrupted whilst the filter portion of a cigarette pair is engaged by a spring-pressed lever 14 so that in the event of the absence of a connector sheet 9 the two cigarette lengths will fall away. Also, should a connector sheet be present but the filter missing, the lever 14 will so deform the assembly that the cigarette lengths will not be in contact with the drum at the point at which suction is resumed through the passages 105, 502 and the assembly will fall away. The lever 14 may be withdrawn from the drum to allow cigarette assemblies to fall for sampling. Properly united assemblies are carried to a transfer point R at which they are removed by a drum 13. In a modification, the fixed body 2 controlling suction by valving action with the rotary drum 1 is replaced by a fixed member with a planar surface having ports coacting with a ported surface on one side of the rotary drum 1. Ports are also provided for blowing to clean the passages 105, 106 after the cigarette assemblies have been removed by the drum 13.
